DESIGNING BARAPAN KEBO MOTIFS AS A FORM OF DEVELOPMENT OF SUMBAWA KRE ALANG WEAVING

Abstract

Kre Alang is one of Sumbawa's traditional fabrics categorised into songket weaving. The uniqueness of Kre Alang lies in the process of lifting the warp threads using sticks, the more sticks used means that the motifs made are more numerous and complicated. Kre Alang motifs are influenced by the environment and culture of the Sumbawa community. The development of motifs is only limited to changes in shape and changes in the placement of motif positions that are not much different from pre-existing motifs. This will make the Kre Alang motif less developed and can cause saturation from craftsmen and consumers of woven fabric products. Based on this background, the researcher tried to create the Kre Alang weaving motif with the idea of one of the traditional games of the Sumbawa community, namely Barapan Kebo (buffalo race). Barapan Kebo is a tradition that can still be found and used as one of the cultural destinations in Sumbawa Regency. Barapan Kebo pits the speed of buffaloes on muddy rice fields before the rice planting period. Barapan Kebo is then interpreted into a Kre Alang weaving motif design with the aim of providing a new alternative for the development of Kre Alang weaving motifs, as well as introducing Barapan Kebo to a wider audience. The research method used in this research is the textile craft creation method, starting from the exploration, design and realisation stages. Research data was collected through observation, literature study and interviews. The research data was analysed to determine the design form of the Kre Alang weaving motif whose idea came from Barapan Kebo.
