This study aims to explore the forms of community acceptance regarding children with special needs at the North Sumatra State Special School for Autism (SLB Negeri Autis), specifically focusing on social interactions between the children and the community. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and participant observation involving local residents, parents, and educators. Interviews were used to gather the informants' experiences and perspectives, while participant observation documented the children's interactions in real-life social situations. Thematic analysis was conducted to identify patterns of social acceptance and the factors influencing them. The results indicate that community acceptance varies. Some community members demonstrate open and inclusive attitudes—manifested through social support, communication assistance, activity guidance, and the creation of a comfortable environment. Others adopt a passive stance or avoid interaction due to a lack of understanding regarding the children's characteristics, leading to misunderstandings and discrimination, whether direct or indirect. Environmental and cultural factors also influence these interactions; inclusive environments facilitate the children's participation, whereas unsupportive environments risk leading to isolation.
