Revisiting Citizenship and Ethical Space in Pancasila Formulation

This article aims to revisit the concept of citizenship which shaped by Pancasila values through ethical conversation. Using a qualitative research methodology anchored in philosophical inquiry, this study examines the meaning, values, and ethical foundations underlying the concept of Pancasila based citizenship. Levinas notion on extraterritoriality and citizenship contemporary discourses are employed as conceptual frameworks to explore that shared space is related to shared understanding and responsibility without undermining the alterity of others. The findings provide a deeper perspective of the concept of citizenship in Indonesian socio-political discourses. As an archipelagic community, Indonesia emerged from its commitment to embrace the concept of nation-state that presupposed the inclusive space equipped by the ethical foundation and impartial system to safeguard the civic rights. Every citizen of Indonesia are expected to commit on peace and justice in domestic and global contexts, opposing any kind of oppression, exploitation, marginalization and dehumanization. Hospitality and solidarity for humanity underlie the formation of Pancasila and the idea of Indonesia as an ethical entity based on core awareness of Unity in Diversity.
