Abstract

Abstract

This article discusses the application of Heideggerian perspectives on existentialism in civic education programs in Indonesia and their critique on the construction of knowledge and the implementation of citizenship values in the education system. The research findings indicate that the concepts of authenticity and ontological education in civic education complement each other in developing individuals as citizens who have a deep understanding of themselves, social responsibility, and the meaning of existence. This approach also prepares them to face the challenges of globalization and world changes, considering the social and historical contexts that influence individuals, thus fostering a caring, responsible, and knowledgeable society. However, the development of civic education programs at the tertiary level in Indonesia needs to consider the critique from Heideggerian perspectives to balance empowering individuals to seek personal life meaning and developing citizenship values inherent in individuals as citizens. Higher education civic education is expected to produce citizens with intellectual competence and strengthen their sense of social responsibility through civic engagement as young citizens in building an inclusive, just, and harmonious public sphere.
