Peer Review Process
Fair, Rigorous, and Transparent Review
Every article we publish passes through a rigorous double-blind peer review. Authors and reviewers remain anonymous to each other from start to finish, so each manuscript is judged on one thing only: the quality of its science.
General Principles
Our review process is designed to safeguard originality, scientific quality, methodological soundness, relevance, and research integrity.
Editorial Screening
Every submission is screened by the editors before it is sent for external review.
Expert Reviewers
At least two independent reviewers, chosen for their expertise, publication record, and freedom from conflicts of interest.
Constructive Feedback
Reviewers advise the editors and offer comments that help authors strengthen their work.
Editorial Decision
The Editor-in-Chief makes the final decision, weighing reviewer advice, scientific quality, and ethical compliance.
From Submission to Publication
Here is the path every manuscript follows at Jurnal Geografi.
- 1
Manuscript Submission
Authors submit through our online system. Manuscripts must match the journal's aims and scope and follow the author guidelines, ethics policies, and preparation requirements.
- 2
Initial Editorial Screening
The Editor-in-Chief or an assigned editor checks whether the manuscript:
- falls within the aims and scope of the journal;
- meets formatting and submission requirements;
- offers sufficient originality and scholarly contribution;
- uses an appropriate, scientifically sound methodology;
- meets basic standards of academic writing; and
- complies with our publication ethics and policies.
Manuscripts that do not meet these requirements may be declined without external review. - 3
Assignment to a Handling Editor
The Editor-in-Chief may assign a Section or Handling Editor with relevant expertise, who oversees the manuscript throughout the review.
- 4
Reviewer Assignment
At least two independent experts review each manuscript under a double-blind model. Reviewers must disclose any potential conflict of interest and decline if their objectivity could be compromised.
- 5
Evaluation Against Review Criteria
Reviewers assess the manuscript using the criteria listed in the next section.
- 6
Reviewer Reports
Reviewers submit written reports with constructive comments and recommendations, which are relayed anonymously to the corresponding author via the online system.
- 7
Editorial Decision
Based on the reports and their own assessment, the editor issues one of four decisions (see Possible Decisions below).
- 8
Revision
Authors asked to revise must submit:
- the revised manuscript;
- a detailed point-by-point response to reviewers; and
- where requested, a version showing tracked changes.
Revisions are due within the period set by the editor, or within 30 days if none is given. Missing the deadline without contacting the editor may result in the manuscript being withdrawn or declined. - 9
Re-review
After a major revision, the manuscript may return to the original reviewers or go to new qualified reviewers. The editor decides whether another round is needed.
- 10
Final Decision
The Editor-in-Chief makes the final call, considering scientific merit, originality, methodological quality, relevance, publication ethics, responsible use of AI tools, the authors' responses, and the reviewers' recommendations.
- 11
Production & Publication
Accepted manuscripts move to production: copyediting, language editing where needed, layout, proofreading, and metadata verification. Authors may be asked to approve the final proof before publication.
Review Criteria
Each manuscript is evaluated on the following aspects.
- Originality and novelty
- Significance and contribution to geography
- Relevance to the journal's aims and scope
- Scientific and methodological rigor
- Appropriate research design and data analysis
- Clarity and validity of results
- Quality of interpretation and discussion
- Adequacy and relevance of references
- Organization and clarity of presentation
- Original authorship and responsible use of AI tools
- Compliance with ethical standards
Possible Decisions
After review, a manuscript receives one of the following decisions.
Accept Submission
Accepted for publication without substantial further revision.
Minor Revision
Limited revisions are needed before acceptance.
Major Revision
Substantial revisions are needed; the revised version may be reviewed again.
Reject
The manuscript does not meet our scientific, methodological, ethical, or editorial standards.
Ethics, Similarity Check & Appeals
We follow internationally recognized standards of publication ethics at every stage of the review process.
Publication Ethics
Jurnal Geografi adheres to the COPE Core Practices. Suspected misconduct, including plagiarism, data fabrication, duplicate submission, and authorship disputes, is handled following COPE guidance. See our Publication Ethics and Malpractice Statement.
Similarity Check
All submissions are screened with [[Turnitin / iThenticate]] before peer review. Manuscripts with an overall similarity above [[20]]%, or significant overlap with a single source, are returned to the authors or declined.
Appeals & Complaints
Authors may appeal an editorial decision by writing to the Editor-in-Chief at [[email]] within [[30]] days, stating clear scientific grounds. Appeals are assessed by an editor not involved in the original decision.
Our Editorial Standards
The safeguards that keep our review process fair, independent, and confidential.
Review Timeline
We aim to complete the first round of review within about four weeks of reviewer assignment. The full process may vary with reviewer availability, manuscript complexity, the number of revision rounds, and author responsiveness.
Confidentiality
Manuscripts, reviewer reports, and editorial correspondence are strictly confidential. Editors and reviewers may not share them, use unpublished material for personal gain, or upload them to publicly accessible generative AI tools.
Conflict of Interest
Editors and reviewers must disclose any actual or potential conflict of interest and step aside whenever it could compromise a fair and independent review.
Editorial Independence
Decisions rest solely on academic merit, originality, scientific quality, relevance, ethics, and contribution. Commercial interests, affiliation, nationality, gender, religion, political views, and other non-academic factors play no role.
Publication & Archiving
Jurnal Geografi uses LOCKSS to create a distributed archive among participating libraries, enabling permanent preservation and restoration of the journal's content.
