Responsibilities

Duties of Each Party

Authors

Duties of Authors

  • Submit only original work that is unpublished and not under review elsewhere.
  • Do not submit the same manuscript to more than one journal at the same time.
  • Report data, methods, analyses, and findings accurately.
  • Cite and acknowledge all sources properly.
  • Avoid plagiarism, fabrication, falsification, duplicate or redundant publication, and citation manipulation.
  • Disclose all potential conflicts of interest and all sources of research funding.
  • Obtain ethical approval for research involving humans, animals, or sensitive data where applicable.
  • Ensure every listed author made a substantial contribution.
  • Cooperate with editors on questions, corrections, and investigations.
Authorship

Authorship and Contributorship

  • Authorship is limited to those who made a substantial contribution to the research or writing.
  • All authors must approve the final version, agree to its submission, and take responsibility for the work.
  • Contributors who do not qualify as authors should be acknowledged appropriately.
  • Adding, removing, or reordering authors after submission requires the approval of all authors and a justification to the editor.
  • Authors are encouraged to describe their contributions using the CRediT (Contributor Roles Taxonomy).
Editors

Duties of Editors

  • Ensure the integrity, fairness, confidentiality, and quality of the editorial process.
  • Evaluate manuscripts on academic merit, originality, methodology, relevance, and ethical compliance.
  • Decide independently and without discrimination; decisions are not influenced by nationality, ethnicity, gender, religion, affiliation, politics, or commercial factors.
  • Protect the confidentiality of manuscripts and avoid conflicts of interest.
  • Ensure appropriate peer review.
  • Act on credible allegations of misconduct and publish corrections, retractions, or expressions of concern when needed.
  • Protect the integrity of the scholarly record.
Reviewers

Duties of Reviewers

  • Provide objective, constructive, and timely assessments.
  • Maintain confidentiality and disclose any conflicts of interest.
  • Decline reviews outside their expertise.
  • Identify relevant published work that has not been cited, where appropriate.
  • Avoid personal criticism of authors.
  • Do not use unpublished material for personal or professional advantage.
  • Report suspected plagiarism, duplicate publication, fabrication, falsification, or other concerns to the editor.
  • Do not upload confidential manuscripts, reports, or editorial materials into public generative AI systems. This also applies to editors.
Publisher

Publisher Responsibilities

The publisher supports publication ethics, editorial independence, long-term preservation, and the integrity of the scholarly record. It does not interfere with individual editorial decisions, but supports appropriate action in cases of misconduct.

Research Integrity

Integrity Standards

Plagiarism and Similarity

  • Plagiarism and improper attribution are not tolerated.
  • All submissions are screened with Turnitin. The maximum permitted similarity is 10%.
  • Similarity is an editorial tool, not judged by percentage alone; editors consider the nature, location, and source of the overlap.
  • Manuscripts involving plagiarism or serious ethical violations may be rejected.
  • Plagiarism found after publication may lead to a correction, retraction, or other notice, depending on its severity.

Use of Artificial Intelligence

  • Limited AI use is allowed for language improvement, grammar, translation assistance, and other non-substantive tasks.
  • AI-generated content must not exceed 20% of the manuscript.
  • Authors must disclose the name of the AI tool, its purpose, and the section where it was used.
  • AI must not be used to fabricate or manipulate data, falsify results, fabricate references, or conceal plagiarism.
  • AI must not replace the authors' own reasoning, analysis, or interpretation, or generate misleading figures, images, tables, or evidence.
  • AI tools cannot be listed as authors or co-authors.
  • AI-detection results are not the sole basis for editorial decisions; authors remain fully responsible for their work.

Data Fabrication and Falsification

  • Authors must not fabricate, manipulate, omit, or misrepresent data or findings.
  • Fabrication is creating data or results that never occurred.
  • Falsification is manipulating materials, processes, images, or results to misrepresent research.
  • Suspected cases may be investigated and may lead to rejection, correction, retraction, or notification of the authors' institution.

Duplicate and Redundant Publication

  • Substantially the same manuscript must not be submitted to or published in more than one journal.
  • This covers simultaneous submission, undisclosed republication, inappropriate fragmentation of a single study, and reuse of substantial published text without citation or justification.
  • Secondary publication is allowed only if it is justified, disclosed, cited, and permitted by the original publisher.

Citation Practices

  • Citations must be accurate, relevant, and used for legitimate scholarly purposes.
  • Prohibited: excessive unjustified self-citation, coercive citation, citation cartels, irrelevant citations that inflate citation counts, and requiring citations to Jurnal Geografi articles without academic relevance.
  • Editors and reviewers must not pressure authors to add unnecessary citations.

Research Ethics

  • Research involving humans, animals, personal data, indigenous communities, or environmentally sensitive subjects must follow applicable ethical standards and regulations.
  • Authors may need to provide details of ethical approval, informed consent, ethics committee or IRB approval, confidentiality and privacy protections, and permissions for restricted data.
  • Editors may request supporting ethics documentation.

Conflicts of Interest

Authors, reviewers, and editors must disclose any actual, potential, or perceived conflict of interest, such as financial ties, employment, institutional or personal relationships, academic competition, or intellectual property interests. Disclosure does not automatically prevent publication, but transparency is required.

Editorial Process

Fairness and Independence

Confidentiality

Manuscripts, reviewer reports, correspondence, and supporting documents are confidential. They must not be disclosed to unauthorized parties, and unpublished peer-review information must not be used for personal advantage or unrelated research.

Editorial Independence

Decisions are based solely on academic merit, originality, scientific quality, methodological rigor, relevance, ethical compliance, and contribution to the field. The publisher, institution, sponsors, advertisers, and other external parties must not interfere.

Complaints and Appeals

Authors may submit complaints or appeals about editorial decisions or procedures on clear academic or procedural grounds, not simple disagreement. Appeals are reviewed fairly, where appropriate by an editor not previously involved. An appeal does not guarantee a change of decision.

Misconduct and the Scholarly Record

How We Handle Concerns

Allegations of misconduct are taken seriously and evaluated fairly and confidentially. These include plagiarism, fabrication, falsification, unethical research, inappropriate authorship, undisclosed conflicts of interest, peer-review or citation manipulation, and duplicate publication. The journal may contact authors, reviewers, or institutions to clarify concerns.

Correction

Corrections

Published for errors that do not invalidate the findings but need clarification. Corrections are clearly identified and linked to the original article, which remains in the record unless a retraction is necessary.

Expression of Concern

Expressions of Concern

Issued when serious concerns exist but the evidence is inconclusive or an investigation is ongoing. The notice is linked to the original article and updated as information develops.

Retraction

Retractions

Articles may be retracted when findings are unreliable or serious misconduct has occurred, including fabrication, falsification, plagiarism, duplicate publication, serious methodological or ethical violations, peer-review manipulation, or other circumstances that significantly undermine the article's integrity. Retraction notices state the reason and remain permanently accessible.

Discussion

Post-Publication Discussion

We support responsible post-publication discussion. Readers, authors, and researchers may report concerns to the editorial office at jurnalgeografi@unimed.ac.id. Concerns are evaluated under this policy and COPE principles and may lead to a correction, response, expression of concern, or retraction.
