Architectural Adaptation Strategy for Flood-prone Settlements in the Riverbank Area of Medan City in Hydromythological Disaster Mitigation

Medan Maimun District, as the cultural and historical center of Medan City, faces serious challenges related to flooding due to the density of organizations along the banks of the Deli River. This study aims to examine the characteristics of vulnerable organizations and the adaptation strategies implemented by the community in facing the threat of hydrometeorological disasters. Based on observations and information, it was found that many buildings were constructed without adequate planning, resulting in high infrastructure vulnerability. The use of architectural adaptation techniques such as raising floors, building stilt houses, and selecting waterproof materials has been implemented by the community. Flood mitigation efforts at the neighborhood scale, such as improving drainage systems and providing evacuation routes, are also needed to increase the area's resilience. The results of the study indicate that implementing architectural maintenance is an effective strategy to reduce flood risk. However, the government is expected to be more active in monitoring land use and raising public awareness through education related to disaster mitigation. Furthermore, further research is expected to explore more adaptive organizational designs to disasters, which incorporate aspects of poverty, social characteristics, and the physical conditions of the area.
