Publication Ethics
Jurnal Seni Rupa Universitas Negeri Medan is fully committed to upholding academic integrity and adhering to the principles of publication ethics as recommended by the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE). Every party involved in the publishing process—journal managers, editors, reviewers, and authors—has duties and responsibilities in accordance with their respective roles.
Duties and Responsibilities of the Journal Manager

Define the journal’s name, scope, frequency of publication, and accreditation when required.

Appoint members of the editorial board.

Establish clear relationships between publishers, editors, reviewers, and other parties through official agreements or contracts.

Safeguard the confidentiality of all parties involved, including authors, editors, and reviewers.
-
Uphold intellectual property rights and copyright provisions.
-
Review and communicate journal policies to authors, editors, reviewers, and readers.
-
Develop codes of conduct for editors and reviewers.
-
Publish the journal regularly and on schedule.
-
Ensure the availability of financial resources to support sustainable publication.
-
Build cooperation and establish effective marketing networks.
-
Provide licenses and fulfill other necessary legal requirements.
Duties and Responsibilities of the Journal Editor

Bridge the needs of both readers and authors.

Strive for continuous improvement of publication quality.
-
Implement editorial processes to ensure the quality of manuscripts.
-
Promote academic freedom with objectivity.
-
Maintain the integrity of authors’ academic records.
-
Publish corrections, clarifications, retractions, or apologies when necessary.
-
Take responsibility for the style and format of articles, while the content remains the sole responsibility of the author(s).

Gather feedback from authors, readers, reviewers, and the editorial board to enhance publication quality.
-
Support initiatives to prevent research and publication misconduct, including requesting ethical clearance documents when relevant.
-
Remain open to new perspectives, even those that differ from personal views.
-
Avoid defending personal, authors’, or third-party interests that may compromise objectivity.
-
Encourage authors to improve their manuscripts so they are fit for publication.
Duties and Responsibilities of Peer-Reviewers

Review manuscripts as assigned by the editor and provide feedback to help determine publication eligibility.

Decline to review manuscripts where conflicts of interest exist, either directly or indirectly.
-
Maintain confidentiality of manuscripts and review outcomes.
-
Provide constructive suggestions to improve manuscript quality.
-
Evaluate manuscripts based on scientific standards, including research methodology, validity of findings, and clarity of conclusions.

Complete the review process in a timely manner in accordance with journal guidelines.
Duties and Responsibilities of Authors
-
Ensure that all listed authors meet authorship criteria.
-
Take collective responsibility for the content of the article, including methods, analysis, calculations, and research details.
-
Clearly state sources of funding or research support.
-
Disclose limitations of the research.
-
Respond to reviewers’ comments professionally and in a timely manner.
-
Notify the editor if they wish to withdraw their manuscript from the publication process.
-
Confirm that the submitted manuscript is original, has not been published elsewhere in any language, and is not under consideration by another publisher.
Retraction, Correction, and Withdrawal Policy
Jurnal Seni Rupa Universitas Negeri Medan is committed to maintaining academic integrity through clear policies on retraction, correction, and withdrawal, following the guidelines of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE).
1. Retraction Policy
An article may be retracted if:

It is proven to involve plagiarism or redundant/duplicate publication.

Evidence of data fabrication or falsification is found.
-
The article violates research ethics, including lack of ethical clearance for studies involving humans or animals.
-
Serious errors are discovered that invalidate the research findings.
Actions taken:

A Retraction Notice will be published on the journal’s website.
-
The original article will remain accessible but will be marked with a “Retracted” watermark.
-
Metadata will be retained for archiving purposes.
2. Correction Policy (Erratum/Correction)
Corrections will be issued if minor errors are found that do not undermine the validity of the article, such as:

Significant typographical errors (e.g., author names, affiliations, numerical data).
-
Errors in the presentation of tables, figures, or references.
-
Incomplete acknowledgments or funding information.
Actions taken:

The editor will publish an Erratum/Correction Notice linked to the article.
-
The online version of the article will be updated with a correction note.
3. Withdrawal Policy
Authors may request withdrawal of their manuscript prior to the completion of the review process. However:

Once peer review has begun, withdrawal will only be considered under valid reasons (e.g., serious methodological errors discovered post-submission).
-
Withdrawal after acceptance or publication is regarded as a violation of publication ethics, except under exceptional circumstances.
Actions taken:

If approved, the manuscript status will be marked as “Withdrawn” on the journal’s website.
-
Withdrawal requests after publication must include an official explanation from the author(s) and require approval from the Editor-in-Chief.
4. Replacement Policy
If a published article contains significant errors but the author submits a corrected version:

The original article will be replaced with the corrected one.
-
Metadata of the original article will be retained.
-
An Article Replacement Notice will be published.
5. COPE Flowchart Implementation
All cases of retraction, correction, and withdrawal will be handled in accordance with the COPE Flowcharts to ensure editorial transparency and accountability.
