Abstract

This study aims to analyze in depth the difficulties experienced by fourth grade students of SDN 066053 Mandala in understanding multiplication and fractions material, and its impact on their learning interest. Using a descriptive qualitative method, this study involved a fourth grade teacher as the subject. Data were collected through interviews and documentation, then analyzed using the Miles and Huberman (1994) model which includes data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The results showed that fourth grade students still had difficulty in mastering the abstract concepts of multiplication and fractions. This difficulty had a negative impact on students' learning interest, causing boredom and lack of participation in learning. To overcome this challenge, teachers implemented various innovative strategies such as the use of concrete teaching aids, game-based learning methods (eg, mathematical hopscotch), peer tutoring approaches, and daily multiplication memorization exercises. These strategies have proven effective in increasing students' enthusiasm, focus, motivation, and understanding of mathematics material. This study is in line with Piaget's cognitive development theory which states that elementary school students need a concrete approach in understanding mathematical concepts.
