Abstract

This study aims to reveal the problems of understanding mathematical concepts in elementary school students related to the way teachers teach, with a case study at UPT Negeri 060866 Elementary School, East Medan. Based on the results of interviews with students and teachers, a number of problems were found that hinder students' understanding of mathematical concepts. From the students' perspective, the problems include low interest and motivation to learn, the assumption that mathematics is a difficult subject, difficulty in linking concepts to everyday life, and limitations in abstract thinking skills. Meanwhile, from the teachers' perspective, the learning that is carried out tends to be conventional, does not involve students actively, and minimal use of learning media that supports concrete understanding. In addition, monotonous teaching methods and the use of language that is not appropriate to the level of student thinking are also obstacles. Teachers also rarely provide explanations for students' mistakes in working on problems. These findings indicate that understanding mathematical concepts is directly influenced by the teaching strategies used by teachers and students' cognitive readiness. Therefore, a more contextual, communicative, and adaptive learning approach is needed to meet student characteristics.
